Sourdough Calculators

Guidance, not guarantee.

‹ All calculators

Two things share this page: the web calculators at the addresses on the home page, and the Just Dough It app for Android. Each has its own section below.

The web calculators

Bread, yogurt, lacto-ferment, and pasta & noodles, each at its own address.

The short version

There are no accounts, no advertising and no analytics. Nothing you enter is sent to the people who made these apps. What you type and save stays in your browser on your device.

What is stored on your device

Each calculator keeps its settings, your last inputs and, where it has them, your history (saved loaves, the starter feeding log, past ferments) in your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser's site data for that calculator removes it. Each calculator is on its own address, so they do not share this.

What is sent, and only when you ask

The calculators work without sending anything. A few things use a service outside the app, and only when you tap the button for them (or switch on "detect automatically"):

  • Weather. "Use my location" asks your browser for your location. Your position, rounded to about 1 km, is sent to Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) to read the outdoor temperature and forecast, and in the bread app also the last three weeks of temperatures to estimate your tap water.
  • Your town, for water hardness. In the bread and lacto-ferment apps the same rounded position is sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim (nominatim.openstreetmap.org) to find your town, so the app can look up water hardness. A UK postcode typed into Settings is looked up inside the app and is not sent anywhere.
  • Google Calendar. The lacto-ferment app's calendar buttons are links. Tapping one opens Google Calendar with the batch details in the link, and Google handles it from there.

Those services have their own privacy policies and may see your IP address, as any website does. The apps do not send them anything else.

Hosting

The pages are served by Cloudflare, which, like any host, sees the ordinary request details needed to deliver a web page. The apps add no cookies and no tracking scripts.

Privacy Policy for Just Dough It

Last updated: October 28, 2026

Just Dough It ("the App") is a baking tool with calculators for sourdough bread, yogurt, and lacto-fermentation. This policy explains what data the App handles and how it is used.

Data we collect

The App does not require an account and does not collect personal identifiers for the calculators. The native apps do not include an analytics SDK, and neither do the websites (see "The web calculators" below).

All your app data — starter feeding history, saved recipes, fermentation history, and settings — is stored only on your device using local storage. Ferments you calculate are recorded automatically (there is no save button) and are rotated out after 12 months. We do not have access to this data.

Location data

With your permission, the App accesses your device's coarse location solely to determine your local ambient temperature and water hardness, which affect fermentation timing and hydration calculations.

When you grant location permission, your coordinates are sent to two third-party services:

Service Purpose Privacy Policy
Open-Meteo Current temperature at your location open-meteo.com/en/privacy
OpenStreetMap / Nominatim Reverse geocoding (coordinates → city/region) osmfoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_Policy

These requests contain only your coordinates and a user-agent string identifying the App. No account information, device identifiers, or other personal data is attached.

The App may request location permission when you open a calculator, or when you tap its location refresh control. You can decline permission and enter temperature values manually. Entering a postcode uses geocoding to refine the local conditions.

Google Calendar links (optional)

The lacto-fermentation calculator can add a ferment to your calendar. This is not a background integration: nothing is sent anywhere until you tap the button. Tapping it opens a calendar.google.com link in your browser or the Google Calendar app, with the event details (ferment style, batch, salt, timings) encoded in that URL. Google therefore receives those details, and whatever your Google account does with them is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. The App itself does not connect to Google — it only hands the link to your device's browser. Skip the button and nothing is transmitted.

Ask the baker (not currently available)

"Ask the baker" was an optional box for questions about the lazy sourdough method, answered by an AI service. It is switched off: it does not appear in the App, and the website no longer runs the service it needs, so nothing is sent anywhere for it. If it ever returns, this policy will be updated first to say exactly what would be sent and to whom, and you would be asked before anything is.

The web calculators

The calculators are also available in a web browser, at sourdoughcalculator.uk and its subdomains (bread, yogurt, lactoferment and pasta). They work the same way: no account, no analytics, everything you save stays in your browser, and location is only used, and the services above only contacted, when you tap the button for it. Their own section, with details, is at https://sourdoughcalculator.uk/privacy.

Data sharing

Beyond the location and optional calendar flows described above, the App does not sell your data or transmit your saved recipes and starter logs to third parties. There are no advertising networks or analytics SDKs in the native apps.

Data retention

All locally stored data (recipes, starter history, settings) remains on your device until you delete the App or clear its storage. We keep no copy of it. Our websites and the App hold no data about you on any server of ours.

Children's privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to this policy

Updates will be posted at this URL. Continuing to use the App after changes constitutes acceptance.
